Obituary:

Millard "Mel" Wren, 82, of Lawrence passed away peacefully at his home on July 26,2014.

Mel was born May 28,1932 in Williamsburg, KS, the son of Millard and Leona (Smith) Wren.

He attended Williamsburg schools graduating in 1950. He received his Bachelor of Science in 1954 from Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, KS where he was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. He received his Master of Arts in 1959 from Colorado State College, Greeley, Colorado. He also had additonal hours completed from Pittsburg State College, Pittsburg, KS. He served 21 years in education as a teacher and administrator in Osawatomie and Paola, KS, 1954-1975.

After moving to Lawrence in 1976, Mel worked in the private sector as a purchasing agent for many years before retiring from Lawrence Memorial Hospital in 1996. After retirement he volunteered in the development of Therapeutic Riding programs for the school of Equestrian Arts at Big Springs, KS.

Mel married Alice (Koontz) on June 27, 1954 in Ottawa, KS. they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversay.

Mel and Alice enjoyed the outdoorss together spending countless hours with their horses trailriding in Kansas and Missouri.

Survivors include his wife Alice of the home. Two daughters, Sheri (Dale) Richling of Lawrence and Alicia (Jack) Reynolds of Topeka. Five grandchildren, Jacob, Leona and Eileen Richling. Bailey and Tori Reynolds. One sister Marilyn (Joel) Nordeen of Ottawa, one sister in law Ruth (Jerry) Rutledge of Lawrence and their children.

He was preceded in death by a son Maurice R.

Memorial Services will be at 10:45a.m. on Aug 2, 2014 at Westside Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Dr, Lawrence. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Hospice.
