Michelle Renee Setter, age 44, of
rural Lane, Kansas, formerly of Humboldt, Kansas, died May
23, 2017 at Miami County Medical Center, Paola, Kansas.
Michelle was born July 6, 1972 at
Iola, Kansas. She was the youngest of five children born to
Paul and Dorothy (Reaves) Setter. She grew up in Humboldt
and graduated from Humboldt High School with the Class of
1990. During her high school years, Michelle
played basketball for the Humboldt Lady Cubs. They were the
only Humboldt girls' team making it to State from 1990 until
2017. She was a member of the Full-O-Pep 4-H Club and the
National Honor Society. After high school, she continued her
education at Allen County Community College and earned her
Associates Degree. Michelle continued her education at
Pittsburg State University where she earned her teaching
degree in 1994 and later her Masters Degree in July of 1999.
Her teaching career began at
Osawatomie High School as an English teacher from 1994 until
2012, when her teaching profession was cut short due to her
health condition. She also taught Spanish, Journalism, and
was the sponsor of the Scholars Bowl team. She had also been
a sponsor for the Osawatomie High School Dance Team. At the
high school, you could find Michelle serving as a volleyball
line judge, taking tickets at sporting events, and attending
all school activities. She took several trips with the
students in Spanish Club and the Junior Class. Michelle and her high school
sweetheart Joe Ornelas have made their home in rural Lane,
Kansas since the mid '90s. She thoroughly enjoyed the
country life with pets, a huge garden, and lots of flowers.
Babe was her canine companion, a yellow lab, and she also
had several cats. She loved canning and cooking and was well
known for her homemade salsa, jalapeno jelly, and
blackberries. She was an avid reader and belonged to the
Persian Pickle Book Club. Nothing got between Michelle and
her KU basketball games. Social media was an important part
of Michelle's life, it kept her connected to family and
friends. She was preceded in death by an infant
brother, her paternal grandparents Andrew and Mary Setter,
maternal grandparents Edmund N. and Ora Belle Reaves, an
infant nephew B. C. Ames, and her fiance's father John
Ornelas. She is survived by her fiance Joe Ornelas of the
home; her parents Paul and Dorothy Setter; her siblings Mike
(Pam) Setter, Melinda (Cole) Herder, and Amanda (Doug) Ames
all of Humboldt; 9 nieces and nephews David, Jeremy, and
Anna Setter, Ryan Herder, Janelle (Herder) Williams, Megan
Herder, Cade Ames, Briana Ames, Alex Donnelly; including her
fiance's sister Elizabeth Donnelly and mother Ana Ornelas;
many other relatives and friends. A memorial visitation will be held
from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, May 26 at Dengel & Son
Mortuary, 605 O'Neal Ave., Osawatomie, KS, 66064. A memorial
service will be held at 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 30 at the
Humboldt Methodist Church, 806 N. 9th Street, Humboldt, KS,
66748 with visitation following. Contributions in her memory are to the
Michelle Setter Memorial Scholarship at Osawatomie High
School, the Michelle Setter Memorial Scholarship at Humboldt
High School, or the Humboldt Library in care of Dengel &
Son Mortuary - Crematory, 605 O'Neal Ave., Osawatomie, KS,
