RICHARD E. "DICK" SHORES

SEPTEMBER 27, 1937 - NOVEMBER 17, 2014

Richard E. “Dick” Shores, 77, a resident of Fort Scott, died Nov. 17, 2014, at Fort Scott Manor.

He was born Sept. 27, 1937, in Osawatomie, the son of Thomas E. and Edith A. Spellman Shores.

He graduated from Osawatomie High School with the class of 1955. He graduated from Baker University and was a four-year letterman in football.

He began teaching and coaching at Linwood, Kan., Junior High and later Overbrook, Kan., High School. After obtaining his doctorate from the University of Kansas, he taught for four years at Wisconsin University, then George Peabody’s Teachers College in Nashville, Tenn., which later merged with Vanderbilt University, for a total of 16 years. Dick then worked for Kansas University at Parsons, Kan., as director of research. Before retirement, Dick moved to Fort Scott, living at Lake Fort Scott. Throughout his career, he was awarded numerous honors for his contributions to special education. He had a lifelong love for football, as well as hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Heidi Shores; and his parents.

Survivors include his brother, Bob Shores (Wilma) of Fort Scott; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

According to Dick’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Private family burial will take place in the Osawatomie Cemetery.
