James LeRoy “Jim” Hunsperger, 77, Osawatomie, died June 15, 2011, at the Golden Living Center in Spring Hill.

Jim was born Jan. 28, 1934, in Osawatomie. He was the third of five children of Orville Biehm and Ethel Lenora Hastings Hunsperger. He attended Osawatomie schools and graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1952.

He worked for the Osawatomie State Hospital for a short time where he met Ruby Marie Stocksen. They were married Aug. 11, 1955, in Paola. They made their home in Osawatomie and became the parents of three children.

In August of 1956, he joined the Marines and attained the rank of corporal before being discharged in August 1958. He then worked at Delco Battery in Olathe from 1962 to 1994.

He loved his Harley motorcycle and he liked to travel. The family made many trips and camped a lot. He liked to hunt, fish, cut wood, tell stories, collect and build model trains, restore old tractors, and he enjoyed helping neighbors, mowing, pushing snow, etc.

He loved to show pictures and tell stories about his cat, “Tom.” He always finished each story about his cat with “ain’t he a dandy.” He was preceded in death by his brothers, Owen, Gene and Bob Hunsperger.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby of the home; one daughter, Mary Beth; two sons, Bret and Cody; one grandson; one granddaughter, all of Osawatomie; two step-grandsons and one great-granddaughter, all of Ottawa; and one sister, Orvella Badders of Osawatomie.

Service was Saturday under arrangements of the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, 203 Main St., Osawatomie, KS 66064, (913) 755-2114, followed by burial in the Osawatomie Cemetery with military honors.

Memorials are to Kansas State University Cancer Research.
