CLASS OF 1946

MAY 28, 1927 - JUNE 15, 2011

June was born on May 28, 1927 in Ottawa, KS to James and Mabel Winters. She was the third of 9 children. The family moved to Osawatomie, KS when June was a toddler. While attending Osawatomie High School, June served as an artist for her Senior Yearbook, was active in the Current Events Club, Mixed Chorus, the Glee Club, and served as class treasurer. She graduated in 1946 and was inducted in the National Honor Society. She was active in the Assembly of God Church where she taught Sunday shool and sang special songs during services. The pastor from the Assembly of God Church in Hutchinson, a friend of the family, introduced June to Alva Swarner. Their courtship lasted less than six months and they were married on June 21, 1952 in Osawatomie, KS.

The newlyweds resided in Hutchinson until they relocated to Southern California in 1953. They first lived in Maywood where Alva Jay taught elementary school for about a year until he was hired at Continental Airlines, and then later at Western Airlines. June worked as a secretary for Merle Norman Cosmetics as well as ForestLawn Cemeteries. Al's work for the airlines allowed them the opportunity to travel to various countries in Europe and Central America, and of course, throughout the U.S. They especially enjoyed flying back to Kansas to visit family and friends. Al and June retired in Inglewood, California where they were very active in ministry at the Assemblies Churches in Inglewood and Redondo Beach. June was very active in the women's and children's ministries where she often taught Sunday school. She also taught an after school Bible program in the 1970's.

June was an exceptional artist in many areas. She wrote numerous poems and short stories. She was also an excellent painter and even dabbled in Sculpting Many of her paintings still grace the walls of the homes of the family. Her hands were never still; she was always sketching someone or something. She loved to read, spending many an afternoon with Al enjoying a good book. She also enjoyed spending time out in the garden.

In 2006, they left Inglewood and moved to Western Assemblies Home in Claremont, California where they resided until 2009. Shortly thereafter they moved to Claremont Place. It was here where Al went home to be with the Lord on the morning of February 27, 2011. This past May, June moved to Genesis Manor in Rancho Cucamonga where she could be closer to family. She went home to be with the Lord on the morning of June 15, 2011.

June is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-laws, Bonnie and Dean Carls, Rose and LeRoy Butts and their children, and Arlene and Ray Smith and their children. She is survived by her sister-in-law Laurel Kay Thompson and her husband Brian, nephews Shawn and Patrick Thompson and their wives, Sherri and Greta, and her three greatnieces, Rachel, Hannah, and Arissa Thompson, and the many friends who loved her dearly. She will be greatly missed by all.
