NOVEMBER 17, 1926 - APRIL 29, 2010

Doug Howarter, 83, died Monday, April 19, 2010 at Western Plains Medical Complex at Dodge City, KS. He was born on November 17, 1926 at Osawatomie, Kansas, the son of James Roy and Nora Olive Mullendore Howarter.

Mr. Howarter spent his early years in Osawatomie and attended schools there. After graduation from high school in 1944, he entered the U.S. Navy and served during the end of WWII. After he returned, he moved to Dodge City, and attended Dodge City Community College, receiving his associate degree. On December 31, 1950, he married Marjory Crane in Dodge City. She survives. He was employed for thirty three years with the Coca Cola Bottling Company as a route manager. He later worked for the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company, also in Dodge City, for an additional sixteen years. Later in his life he worked for Wardrobe Cleaners, Sonic Restaurant, and Natures Corner nursery, all of Dodge City. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bowling.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, and Howard Gotschall Post #1714, V.F.W., all of Dodge City.

Survivors include his wife, Marjory A. Howarter of Dodge City, two sons, Alan Howarter and wife Barbara of Wichita, Gary Howarter of Burnsville, Minnesota; one daughter, Cheryl Singhisen of Holcomb, one brother, Junior Howarter of Dodge City, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral service will be held at Swaim Funeral Home on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Dick Robbins presiding. Burial will follow at Greencrest Cemetery in Dodge City, with military rites provided by Howard Gotschall Post # 1714, V.F.W., Dodge City. Visitation will be at Swaim Funeral Home on Thursday, April 22, 2010 from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Memorials can be made to Good Samaritan Center, Dodge City in care of the funeral home.
