MAX DEAN CHITWOOD

CLASS OF 1944

DECEMBER 12, 1926 - MARCH 9, 1960

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12, at the First Baptist Church in Osawatomie, for Max Dean Chitwood, 33, who died March 9, 1960, at the Veteran's Hospital in Kansas City.

Max, the oldest son of Conard and Ruth Chitwood, was born Dec. 12, 1926, on a farm west of Osawatomie. He became a member of the Green Valley Baptist church at the age of 12. He attended Osawatomie High School graduating with the class of 1944.

He was married to Mildred Duncan on Sept. 21, 1947, and to this union one child was born, a son, Joe Ellis, now 11 years old.

He joined the Armed Forces and served two years during World War II. He was a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion and the auxiliary police.

Max was married to Carol Mathews on Sept. 1, 1954. Three children were born to them: Cindy Lea, 3 1/2 years; Michael Dean, 2 years; and Cara Maxine, 4 months.

Survivors include his wife, Carol, two sons, Joe and Michael; two daughters, Cindy Lea and Cara Maxine; his mother, Mrs. Ruth Chitwood of Osawatomie; two sisters, Mrs. Arlene Harclerode of Paola and Mrs. Mary Caraway of Houston, Tex.; one brother, Glenn, stationed in the Army at Fort Riley; seven nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Services were conducted by the Rev. Monroe Vaughn and the Rev. Robert Wheatley. Music was furnished by Jean Young, Josephine Dickey and Nell Dollar. Floral attendants were members of the V.F.W. Auxiliary: Hazel Reed, Thelma Shipley, Mae Miller, Betty Atwood, Helen Crouch, Norma Fletcher and Lorraine Kramer. Pallbearers were Melvin Minden, Ray Anglen, Bert Edwards, Roy Beets, Maurice Zimmerman and Milford Whitney.

Interment was in the Osawatomie cemetery under the direction of the Eddy Funeral Home
