OCTOBER 8, 1922 - NOVEMBER 15, 1997

Clinton Township, Mich.-Last rites for Helen E. Lewis, Mount Clemens, Mich., were held Wednesday, Nov. 19, in St. Louis Catholic Church.

Mrs. Lewis, 75, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997 in University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, Mich.

Born Oct. 8, 1922 in Miami County, she was the daughter of James and Sarah Johann Hammond. She was a 1940 Osawatomie High School graduate. She later worked in an Osawatomie bank prior to her marriage to Franklin Lewis, an Osawatomie native.

Mrs. Lewis retired as director for volunteer services at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital. She was a founding member of the hospital's auxiliary. A member of St. Louis Catholic Church, she served with the Altar Society, Our Ladies Circle, parish council and the Second Horizons Club. Mrs. Lewis also was a member of Mount Clemens Senior Citizens and Mount Clemens Business and Professional Association.

She also served as a tutor for Project Literacy U. S., and was a state board member of Directors for Volunteer Services. Mrs. Lewis was one of the first recipients of the United Way Foundation Annual Gold Heart Award. She enjoyed reading and volunteering for groups and clubs.

Survivors include her husband, Franklin, of the home; and a daughter, Sharon Lewis, Southfield, Mich.

Burial was in Clinton Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Pasquale LoGrasso officiated. Arrangements were cared for by Harold W. Vick Funeral Home in Mount Clemens.

Memorials in her name have been established to Turning Point, St. Vincent De Paul Society and Salvation Army.
