EVA MAE HUNT DAIGH

 

CLASS OF 1936

SEPTEMBER 24, 1918 - MAY 7, 2014 

Eva Mae Daigh passed away May 7th, 2014, in Chicago at age 95. Eva was born September 24th, 1918 to Ralph and Lulu Hunt, the third of 5 children, and grew up on a farm in Pomona,Kansas.

She graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1936 and earned her teaching credentials at Parsons Commmunity College. Eva Marie taught at a one room school in Kansas with 10 students.

She met the love of her life, Dale Winton Daigh, at the young age of 17 and married him at age 23, a long courtship as marriage would have cost her the teacher's job.

In 1947 Eva, Dale and their 3 year old son, David, moved to Durham, CA., bought the hardware store and operated it for more than 40 years. The motto was "The Biggest Little Hardware Store in the Northern Sacramento Valley".

Eva enjoyed traveling to the San Francisco Gift Show to purchase giftware for her customers. She met many people working in the store and many of whom remained good friends throughout her life. Before working full-time at the store, she was a substitute teacher at the Durham Elementary School.

Son, Don, was born in 1952 and the family moved into their new home on Lott Road in 1955. After Dale's death, Eva moved to Brown Street and enjoyed the company of many close friends.

She loved playing cards and started a Thursday night card club. the name of the game was Shanghai Rummy.

Eva was predeceased by her husband, Dale, her parents and her sisters, Juanita and Betty. She is survived by her sons David (Ursula), Don (Carol); and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
