THE CLASS OF 1932

AUGUST 12, 1912 - JANUARY 6, 2005

William W. Hunt, 92, Zephyrhills, Fla., a native of Osawatomie, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Hernando-Pasco Hospice in Dade City, Fla.

The son of William A. and Osa Hughes Hunt, he was born Aug. 12, 1912, in Osawatomie. He was a 1932 graduate of Osawatomie High School.

He was raised on the family farm on John Brown Highway west of Osawatomie. The farm was homesteaded by his grandfather, Asail Hunt, in the 1850s.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard from May 26, 1942, until Sept. 29, 1945, first on the CGC Duane on convoy duty and submarine patrol in the North Atlantic. He was awarded a Bronze Star.

He later served on the USS Wakefield, a former luxury liner converted to a troop ship carrying thousands of troops from Boston and New York to Liverpool and North Africa. After his discharge, he returned to Kansas.

On Nov. 30, 1945, he and Ruth Anne McCrillis were married in West Medford, Mass.

Mr. Hunt was a machinist and worked at the Ford Assembly Plant in Somerville, Mass., General Electric in Somersworth, N.H., and Simplex Wire and Cable Co. in Newington, N.J. He retired in 1972 after 20 years at Shop 31 in Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.

He loved and cherished the land, raising Aberdeen Angus cattle, first in Berwick, Maine, before moving to Dover, N.H., in 1968. The family farm continues near Dover under the supervision of his son, William C. Hunt.

Mr. Hunt was a longtime member and past master of the Beaver Dam Grange in North Berwick, Maine, and a member of Cocheco Grange in Dover. He was also a member of St. John's Lodge, A.F.&A.M., of South Berwick and a member of Dover's 18th Colonial Militia Co. during the 350th anniversary in 1973 and the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976.

He and his wife had wintered for the past 20 years in Zephyrhills.

Those preceding him in death include two brothers, Azol Hunt and Carroll V. Hunt, and a sister, Donna O. Hunt.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Hunt; a daughter, Catherine R. Judd of De Soto, Texas; two sons, William C. Hunt and Gregory W. Hunt, both of Dover; and five grandchildren.

Memorial services were Saturday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Dade City. Another memorial service will be in the spring at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Dover. He was a member of both churches.
