From the Osawatomie Graphic, August 1978:

"Mrs. Marie Dorothy Cortner, 77, 1501 Main St., died Saturday at Holiday Manor following a long illness. The daughter of Anna Margretta Thompson and Joseph Hayes Stansbury, she was born June 21, 1901 in Osawatomie. She was a lifetime resident here. On June 21, 1921, she married James Buford Cortner.

She graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1921.

Besides being an active member of the United Methodist Church since 1920, she was also a member of the Philathea Class of the church and a member of Osawatomie Chapter 26, Order of Eastern Star. She was also a volunteer organist at Holiday Manor.

Survivors include her husband, Buford, of the home; a son, Allen B. Cortner, Topeka; three daughters, Kathleen Y. Perry, Overland Park, Carolyn A. Linnemeyer and Sue Ellen Cortner, both of Grand Junction, Colo.; a sister, Edith N. Mills, Bristow, Okla.; and seven grandchildren.

Services were held Monday in the Eddy-Birchard Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Riley officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Nelle Dollar, Organist, and Mrs. Jo Dickey, Mrs. Dorothy Heckart and Mrs. Mary Ricketts.

Pallbearers were Lyle Fields, John Schuler, J. C. Robertson, Paul Phillips, John Billam and Vie Clawson. Burial was in the Osawatomie Cemetery. The family suggest memorials to the American Cancer Society. A memorial has also been established at Holiday Manor in her name."
