CLASS OF 1921 d. OCTOBER 14, 1992 Hugh Kenneth Phares, 89, lifetime resident of Osawatomie, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1992, at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center. He was born June 14, 1903 in Lebanon, Ohio to William A. and Carolyn Dorothy Zierow Phares. The family moved to Osawatomie when he was a baby and he lived there the rest of his life. He attended the Osawatomie schools and graduated from the Osawatomie High School with the class of 1921. He was married on Feb. 16, 1927, to Ida anderson in Ottawa. They became parents of a daughter, Margaret. Mr. Phares worked as a machinist for the Missouri Pacific Rairoad, was a baker at H. Caton Bakery and worked for the United States Postal Service in the oilfields. From 1934 until his retirement in December 1968, he was employed by the City of Osawatomie. He held several positions, but for many years he was the meter reader. He was very artistic and expressed himself through his many works and pictures in wood and taxidermy. Mr. Phares loved children, and they all knew him as Tuffy. He was known as a plain and common man that was at his best when close to nature and the outdoors. He was happiest when he was hunting, fishing, or working with his wife in the garden. Mrs. Phares preceded him in death in 1982. His parents, two brothers and his son-in-law also preceded him in death. Surviving are his daughter, Margaret Fox, of Overland Park; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Cremation. Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. The Rev. Ted Hunter officiated. Music was provided by Rosalie Bowker at the organ. The songs were “Bells of Saint Mary”, “Ave Maria” and “In The Garden”. Burial was iin the Osawatomie Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. |
