The funeral for Larkin Lewis Bussell, Osawatomie, was held Monday in Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home.

Mr. Bussell, who spent most of his life in the Osawatomie area, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997 in Ark Haven Nursing Home in Fort Scott. He was 97.

Born July 28, 1899 in Mount Moriah, Mo., he was the son of Jasper Martin and Maude Terwilleger Bussell. At the age of 10, he moved with his parents to Kansas and they made their home on a farm near Lane. He began his elementary education in Missouri public schools and then completed his schooling in the Osawatomie school system, graduating from Osawatomie High School in 1920.

He then worked in an oil field near Signal Hill, Calif. for two years. He returned to Kansas in 1924.

On April 19, 1925 he and Alice Nettie Mallory were married in Osawatomie. They became the parents of four children.

Mr. Bussell farmed and also worked in the grain door plant and the bridge and building department for Missouri Pacific Railroad and for Atkinson Grocery. In 1942 he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Osawatomie where he remained until retiring in 1961.

After his retirement he sold real estate for Ralph Waggoner Realty and Wayne Fixley Realty.

His memberships included the First United Methodist Church and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 921, both of Osawatomie. Mr. Bussell was a life-time member of the Elks.

Among those preceding him in death were two daughters, Lillian Bussell and Dorothy Landry, and four brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, of the home; his son, J.C. Bussell, Shelbyville, Texas; his daughter, Wilma Shores, Fort Scott; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Lee Wiersma officiated. BPOE Lodge No. 921 provided memorial services in the funeral home. Pallbearers were Willis Hawk, Ray Bussell, Keith Bussell, Bill Manly, Gary Burgoon and Ernest Swenson. Burial was in Osawatomie Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in his name to the church.
